Australian Hotel wins ' Regis ' battle of Singapore's Hotel name ' St. Regis '

A Singapore Court has upheld the right of an Australian-owned hotel to use the trademark in Park Regis City State, throwing out a ban kicked by St Regis, court papers showed Tuesday.

St Regis, a luxury brand within the band Starwood hotels and resorts, had applied to the Registrar of trade marks to stop Park Regis Singapore has always been the trademark of the city.

But the owner of Regis Park, StayWell Hospitality Group of Australia took the case to the High Court, which ruled on Monday that there was little possibility that consumers would baffle a brand with each other.



"The brand ' Regis ' Park, even though like to the trade mark ' St. Regis, is not likely to be confused with the mark St. Regis ', in particular when taking into account the customers most likely both," judge Judith Prakash said in a written judgment.

"There is too a risk of spoil to the brand ' St. Regis ' by the use of ' Regis ' Park and brand."

St Regis situated in the stylish area of Orchard Road, styles like a six-star hotel while Park Regis is a 4-star hotel in Chinatown.

And while the St. Regis has rates ranging from Sg $ 440 to Sg $ 3000 ($ 350 at $2385) one night, Park Regis offers rooms for as little as Sg 179 $ per night, according to their respective websites.

Besides Singapore, Park Regis has no properties in Dubai and in quite a few Australian cities.

The Attorney for St Regis declined to comment on the chain's U.S. appeal if the result on Tuesday.
