Cinephiles flock to Tribeca in droves, and attendance to the event grows each year. With that in mind, any keen visitors should book a flight to New York as soon as possible – because the films on show at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival are not to be missed.
Here’s our guide to the top 10. Take a look and make sure you book a room in one of the countless hotels in the New York area and prepare yourself for what's on offer:
1. Sunlight Jr.
This gritty romance is set to be one of the festival’s biggest hits. Starring Naomi Watts, Matt Dillon and Norman Reedus, it’s the story of Melissa and her paraplegic boyfriend (Reedus), and how they struggle to cope when Melissa falls pregnant.
2. The English Teacher
The debut feature of director Craig Zisk, comedy-drama The English Teacher stars Julianne Moore as a high school teacher whose routine existence is altered when former star pupil (Michael Angarano) returns with his stern father (Greg Kinnear) after failing as a playwright.
3. Before Midnight
Richard Linklater’s much-anticipated follow-up to cult romances Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, Before Midnight catches up with series’ protagonists Jesse and Celine nine years later.
4. Taboor
An otherworldly sci-fi film from Iranian director Vahid Vakilifar, Taboor follows the life of a silver-jumpsuit-wearing motorcyclist as he makes his way through a futuristic Tehran.
5. Byzantium
Interview with the Vampire director Neil Jordan returns to similar territory: Byzantium tells the story of Clara and Eleanor Webb (Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan), who, along with being mother and daughter, also happen to be vampires.
6. Michael H. Profession: Director
An intimate portrait of usually-reticent Austrian director Michael Haneke, which promises to be essential viewing not just for Haneke fans, but for anyone with an interest in contemporary cinema.
7. Out of Print
A close-up look at the publishing industry as it moves into the 21st century and switches from hard copies to eBooks. It’s a serious work, and one that’s especially important as we move into an era when books as we know them are becoming increasingly electronic.
8. Big Bad Wolves
Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales return with a follow-up to their 2011 feature, Rabies, and expectations are extremely high for Israel’s new horror pioneers.
9. Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia
A tribute to the life and work of one of America’s leading men-of-letters, this documentary features interviews with the Gore Vidal himself, as well as with well-known contemporaries, such as Christopher Hitchens.
10. The King of Comedy
Closing this year’s festival is one of Scorsese and De Niro’s finest collaborations. Released in 1982, The King of Comedy is as fresh as it ever was and the new, remastered print will surely provide the perfect screening on which to end this year’s festival.
